Texas Cowgirl basketball

I want to share photos here from the 5 seasons I played with the Texas Cowgirls basketball team.
I have alot of good memories from that time, not only of the games and entertainment we provided  but also of the people we met along the way.
I know there is "buzz" out there regarding "barnstorming " days of womens basketball teams. Hope to  make contact with fellow Cowgirls and hear  your stories and see your photos.

This is great! Thanks so much for posting this. I actually have an interest in women in sport and finishing a thesis on the topic. Your pictures are great and I am really looking forward to finding out more about your team and experiences. connie

I think we can make your thesis very interesting. I have contact with 3 other cowgirls that have experience's and photos. Also if you notice the link on the right is Erin Hovland who is the daughter of Dempsey Hovland and she has tons of information and done miles of research on the years her Dad had the team . Let us know how to help out for your thesis. Should be fun .

Harlean and I played for three years together. She loved photography, alway reading a magazine for photography or checking out a camera. I remember she liked motorcycles also. Whenever one was around she was on it, checking it out. Harlean was the spark of the team and was really good at (hog tying) during the game! I can still picture her getting the rope and twirling it to catch the guy!! The crowd loved it!! Harlean, was a good sport for any thing that came up to do..
We connected over her website, after another teammate told me about it. I sent her a message on it asking if she remembered me? Since, then Bernie, Elvera and myself flew down to meet her. It had been about 40 years. I am surprised we recognized each other!
Harlean took her Basktball playing very serious and loved to twill the ball on the end of her finger, while waiting for game time. She was really good at it.
I loved my three years of playing Basketbal doing what we loved to do and having a great time doing it.

I love everything about the Texas Cowgirls. I was asked to play for them in the early 60's. I still have the "air mail" letters sent from Dempsey asking me to join them in Chicago. I saved the letters because I could always see the look on people's faces when I would tell them about it. I knew they doubted me as I am only 5' 3" tall. I just pulled out the letters and voila! I made a huge mistake not joining the team at the time but I love my life as it turned out. Glad I found this site though.
